Enhancing Bochica and Huitaca

We’re constantly evaluating how we can enhance our integrated supply chains to bring you even better coffee. Our Sucafina Colombia office recently strengthened the supply chain for our Sucafina Originals from Colombia - Huitaca and Bochica - and we’re excited to share the fruits of those improvements with you.

Now, our Colombian Sucafina Originals include a contribution to sustainability projects that impacts the communities that we source from. To hear more about how this works and to get the inside scoop on how we source them, what to expect and how they bring you even better value, we spoke with Juan Andres Gutierrez, Specialty Supply Chain Coordinator, and Sebastian Romero, Specialty Operations Officer.

What changes are you making to the Colombia Sucafina Originals supply chain?

Juan Andres: We’ve been consistently working to expand and add value through our supply chains in Colombia since we started our specialty sourcing back in 2019. We launched Huitaca and Bochica at the end of 2019, right around the time we started our specialty sourcing operations in both Colombia and Brazil.

The initial suppliers for these lines were not the right fit, so we went back to the drawing board and decided to use the coffees that were coming into our mill in Neiva and identify the coffees with the profile and quality that we’re looking for.

We’ve spent a lot of time evaluating how to continue getting the best quality out of the coffees we’re sourcing.

For Bochica, we were able to take advantage of our much more developed supply chain and find supply partners who can provide us with the qualities we’re looking for year-round. We now have a long roster of suppliers and regions that can help us source this traditional-yet-elevated Colombian profile.

Huitaca will continue to be sourced through the mill in Neiva, and we’ll continue bringing you excellent quality coffees at an affordable price point.

What can clients expect from these new Originals?

Sebastian: Both Originals have something new and valuable to offer clients.

For Bochica, you get the assurance of good cup quality. The profile is an elevated traditional Colombian profile that is very sought-after. You can expect a full body that’s well-rounded with a bright acidity and fruit-forward profile with undertones of chocolate. Sourcing will vary depending on the time of year, but the breadth of climates in Colombia means that it’ll always achieve the same profile with locally-sourced Colombia coffees. Bochica will always be traceable to the subregion, sometimes even to the cooperative.  Overall, I’d say Bochica is a really solid blender.

With Huitaca, you get the benefit of our sourcing networks at an accessible price point. Our Huitaca is fruity with a caramel aroma, bright acidity and medium body. The cup profile is definitely better than other conventionally available blends, so it makes as great blender that’s also a great choice economically.

What else is unique about the Originals supply chain in Colombia?

Juan Andres: I would say the sustainability projects attached to them. For the purchase of each bag in EMEA and NA, we contribute several cents per pound to a project that's building clean drinking water infrastructure in communities within our supply chain.
