Peru Coffee With Social Impact: 2026 Progress Update
A safe place to learn is something every child deserves, yet in remote coffee-growing communities across Amazonas, Peru, deteriorating infrastructure has made that far from guaranteed. Thanks to roasters purchasing Laguna de los Cóndores Beyond Flagship lots, a new school building is now taking shape for 20 primary students in La Playa de Júmeth, a coffee-farming community in the Providencia District.
For over six years, students at Institución Educativa N° 18038 were attending classes in a building the local municipality had formally declared unsafe following a 2021 earthquake. The building’s cracked walls, sinking supports and water damage were worsening. Rather than wait, parents, teachers and neighbours in the community decided to build a new school themselves and find partners to help them see it through.
Thanks to our Beyond Flagship Coffee With Social Impact program, along with a strong partnership with the Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Laguna de los Cóndores, that project is now underway. 2026 investments center on a new three-classroom building of 152 m², constructed using tapial, a traditional rammed-earth technique that utilizes local soil and the community's own building knowledge, paired with improved roofing and drainage to protect against the water damage that affected the old school. Laguna de los Cóndores and the community have led the construction using their own resources and labor, reaching around 75 percent completion by September 2026. Sucafina began collecting a premium toward the project in June 2026 and will use those funds to help finish the remaining work.
Project Impact:
- 20 primary students and approximately 80 coffee-farming families will benefit from a safe, permanent classroom space.
- 16 parent families have contributed 240 workdays of labor toward construction to date.
- The tapial construction technique keeps the project's carbon footprint low and uses skills already present in the community.
- Improved roofing, plastering and drainage address the structural issues that led to the original building being condemned.
The total cost of the project is valued at about $28,000 USD. Laguna de los Cóndores and the community have contributed roughly $21,100 of that to date through their own resources and labor. Since June 2026, Sucafina has collected approximately $5,000 USD in premium toward the project, which will go toward the finishing work still needed to complete it. Roasters interested in bridging the gap can reach out to their usual contact to discuss individual contributions.
Next Steps:
- Remaining work includes flooring, wall finishes, painting and student restrooms, with completion expected within the next two months.
- Laguna de los Cóndores will continue sharing progress, including photographs and testimonial materials, as construction nears completion.
- Sucafina will continue supporting community-nominated initiatives in Amazonas through this program each year.

About Beyond Flagship projects
Beyond Flagship Projects are initiatives linked to IMPACT-verified farmer groups within Sucafina's direct supply chains. These projects are designed to offer partners a flexible way to support IMPACT goals, create measurable impact and drive meaningful change at contribution levels below the typical minimum threshold for full project sponsorship.
Investments are made through a premium and do not need to be tied directly to coffee produced by the project's participating farmers. Instead, support is Origin-specific, for example, purchasing Beyond Flagship contributing coffees from Peru enables investment in Peru-based IMPACT Beyond projects. This approach increases flexibility, expands the potential for impact at scale and supports more consistent data collection and reporting across supply chains.
Roasters interested in making additional/individual investments in this or other IMPACT Beyond Projects should reach out to their trader!
