Supporting Women's Health & Education

Women are a driving force behind coffee production. In addition to working with supply chain partners to support female producers in our direct supply chain, we’re partnering with two organizations, Girls Gotta Run Foundation and Grounds for Health, to continue improving women’s access to essential services. For every bag of our Kenyan and Ethiopian microlots you purchase, we’ll donate a portion of the profits* to support these incredible organizations.

Supporting Education with Girls Gotta Run Foundation

Only half of Ethiopian girls who enroll in primary schools ever make it to grade 5. Students in the Girls Gotta Run program are those most vulnerable to dropping out of school as a result of early marriage or inadequate family resources. Girls in the program receive full tuition, school lunches, a healthcare subsidy, mentorship and menstrual hygiene supplies for the full academic year.

Girls Gotta Run is the first and only non-profit to use Ethiopia’s national sport of running to provide opportunities and protections for adolescent girls in rural communities across Ethiopia. To learn more about the organization and their work, visit girlsgottarun.org. Girls Gotta Run is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

In 2020, Sucafina partnered with GGRF and raised $20,000 to help female students succeed. It costs $1,000 to support one student and her mother, so together, we raised enough money to sponsor 20 students in 2020. We’ll continue our support this year with another 5k Fun Run, microlot donations and more. Keep an eye out for more information.

Promoting Cancer Screening with Grounds for Health

Women who lack access to preventative healthcare are more likely to die of preventable or treatable illnesses like cervical cancer. Expanding cervical cancer screenings could save up to 4.5 million women over the next 15 years. With our partner, Grounds for Health, we’re helping women in coffee-producing communities stop cervical cancer early and get the treatment they need to stay healthy.

Grounds for Health establishes cervical cancer screening and treatment programs in coffee-producing communities.  They work with community leaders and local healthcare providers to expand women’s health education and service. During the coronavirus epidemic, they’ve championed HPV (the virus that causes cervical cancer) self-sampling to enable women to safely test themselves while maintaining social distancing to keep everyone safe.

Now, Sucafina is pledging to pay a premium on all Kenyan microlots and donate a portion of our profits to Grounds for Health.

We invite our customers to match donations and contribute to funding female student-athletes and reducing preventable deaths from cervical cancer.
