In a time of low C prices, climate change and coffee leaf rust wreaking havoc on coffee production and leading many farmers to transition their crops or migrate, it’s easy to feel helpless. But we as importers and roasters don’t have to be.
Introducing The World Coffee Research Checkoff Program
We’re excited to share a new initiative in which we are taking part--and you can too-- that can help find solutions to growing problems in the coffee industry.
The Checkoff Program with World Coffee Research (WCR) helps you make a difference while purchasing great coffee. Participating is simple. Just choose how many pennies per pound purchased you would like to donate to WCR. We’ll add the cost of your donation to your order and take care of sending your donation to WCR.
What is WCR?
WCR was formed in 2012 to address the need for innovation to make coffee more profitable and sustainable. WCR also works to ensure that production can continue to meet demand. They engage in agricultural research and development (R&D) to find new genetic varieties, new market opportunities for farmers and discover ways to become more resilient and more profitable, especially considering the threats posed by climate change.
How You Can Make a Difference
Through your donations to WCR, you’ll be supporting research that helps farmers achieve greater resiliency and better incomes. Some projects they accomplished last year include:
- Established a new coffee breeding hub for African farmers
- Became the first to attempt to sequence the coffee leaf rust genome
- Published the first open-access Arabica coffee genome
