Innovation & Efficiency in QC: Enhancing Quality Control Through AI

At Sucafina, quality control has always been rooted in people: trained palates, shared standards and meaningful engagement with the coffees we are assessing. As Sucafina's network continues to expand, quality teams are handling more samples than ever before across multiple origins, destinations and time zones. Maintaining consistency at that scale requires not only experienced people, but also better ways to share information and support everyday quality decisions.

We've started bringing in AI-integrated tools to help. We sat down with Susan Wilcox, QC Manager & Q Grader in North America (and Profile Print Global Manager) to hear how it's going on the ground and to discuss two of the tools we are using almost daily now: ProfilePrint and CSmart.

Both tools use AI to recognize patterns in coffee data and provide additional information that helps teams work more consistently. In short, they help ease the burden of routine evaluations and data-heavy tasks, allowing quality professionals to focus on interpretation, communication and decision-making.

This article at a glance:

  • AI-integrated tools assist quality professionals by handling routine screening and data analysis, while experienced cuppers and graders continue to make the final quality decisions.
  • These tools improve quality alignment, reduce repetitive work and strengthen data-driven decision-making.
  • By taking care of repetitive tasks, ProfilePrint and Csmart allow quality teams to spend more time on sensory evaluation, communication and nuanced decision making.

ProfilePrint: Early Alignment Through Digital Screening

ProfilePrint is an AI‑driven quality platform that creates a digital “fingerprint” of green coffee using spectrometry. The tool simply scans green coffee samples and compares their signals to trained models built from historical data. This allows quality teams to quickly determine whether a coffee aligns with expected profiles.

“If ProfilePrint indicates that a coffee meets expectations, teams can move forward with greater confidence and speed. If results fall outside expected parameters, the coffee is automatically escalated for traditional evaluation,” as Susan explains. “In this way, technology helps triage samples while keeping graders firmly in control of final decisions.”

As importantly, ProfilePrint provides a shared point of reference. By using a common digital language, teams in different countries can discuss quality with clearer alignment, reducing misunderstandings and supporting more transparent collaboration.

This approach helps quality teams:

  • Reduce unnecessary sample shipments
  • Shorten feedback loops between origin and destination
  • Improve consistency for standardized grades
  • Preserve cupping capacity for higher risk or more complex coffees
  • Improve data points with less work to optimize decisions at different stages of purchasing and production.

CSmart: Bringing Consistency to Green Coffee Classification

While ProfilePrint focuses on sensory analysis, CSmart supports green coffee physical grading. CSmart uses AI‑based image analysis to identify visible defects, assess screen size distribution and document the physical composition of green coffee samples.

These reports do not replace human oversight. Instead, they give quality professionals a consistent baseline from which to interpret results, confirm compliance, and address issues when they arise.

At Sucafina, CSmart provides:

  • Objective, repeatable green grading results
  • Data with more detail at more reference points with less work
  • Clear visual reports that support communication
  • Standardized data across origins, teams and clients
  • Faster turnaround for routine physical assessments

Technology That Supports, Not Replaces, Expertise

A key principle of Sucafina’s use of AI in quality control: people stay at the center. Just as moisture meters, color sorters or other quality equipment already used throughout the coffee industry, these tools simply provide additional information for professionals.

“I think that human review remains essential,” Susan argues, “Especially when results carry commercial or contractual implications.”

Neither ProfilePrint nor CSmart is designed to operate independently of human judgment. Both tools are embedded within defined workflows, clear SOPs and established escalation paths. When results are ambiguous, unexpected or commercially sensitive, sensory evaluation and a human call will always be prioritized – full stop. The goal is for these tools to sharpen our rigor, not shortcut it. This balance ensures that technology strengthens rigor rather than undermining it. AI handles routine screening and data processing; people handle nuance, context and decision‑making.

Looking Ahead

Sucafina’s approach to AI in quality control is deliberate and practical. The focus is not on technology for its own sake, but on supporting people as they navigate an increasingly complex quality landscape.

ProfilePrint and CSmart represent one step in this evolution - tools that help quality teams work smarter while preserving sensory expertise and professional judgment that define quality in coffee.

As Sucafina continues to invest in responsible, human‑centered innovation, one thing remains constant: quality is built by people, strengthened by shared standards and supported, thoughtfully, by technology.
