Brazil Arabica Harvest Update

Cherry is already being harvested in Brazil in the Matas de Minas region, and the other regions are sure to follow suit soon. Sucafina’s research team reports that, by the end of April, we expect 2% of Arabica harvest to be completed. The team projects that the harvest will run through September and that the size of the harvest is expected to be 7% larger than last year.

IMPACT, Sucafina’s responsible sourcing standard, is already available from Brazil.  Updates on availability and progress:

  • Working on expanding suppliers in Mogiana, Garça and Matas de Minas.
  • Preparing to include Conilon producers in south Bahia.
  • IMPACT audits are expected to take place in June for Conilon and July for Arabica.
  • With these new suppliers, our available IMPACT-verified coffees will reach 4.22 million bags of ethically sourced, responsible and sustainable coffee.

With the support of Sucafina Brazil, the Minasul Cooperative is developing the Regenera Project for IMPACT producers. The project involves holding field days and lectures on regenerative agriculture practices for its farmers.. In addition to these trainings, the cooperative will  distribute inputs, such as seed mixes, that will help farmers begin establishing regenerative agriculture practices.

A project that Sucafina in Brazil started last year with an international partner is currently being implemented on two farms in the Cerrado Mineiro region.

  • Improve water efficiency on coffee farms by helping farmers install irrigation systems that reduce total water use.
  • Farms with new irrigation systems will also have access to data from nearby weather monitoring stations and have their own soil sensors to monitor moisture. This will enable farmers tobetter decisions about fertilization and the efficient use of water

Sucafina Brazil conducted the first greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)  analysis at our Varginha offices and warehouse is demonstrating the impact Sucafina can make:

  • 4.5 tons of CO2 equivalent avoided by using ethanol in some vehicles.
  • 3.74 tons of CO2 avoided through new solar power (photovoltaic) plant.
  • The analysis was carried out in accordance with internationally accepted standards: GHG Protocol, ISO 14064 and IPCC.
  • In 2024, Sucafina in Brazil will continue analyzing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening their strategy to further reduce emissions in the coming years.
